New Roads Program |
| Coordinator: |
New Roads Coordinator |
| Description: |
The New Roads Program is a free 16 week, early intervention program forpre-adolescents (7-11) who are engaging in at-risk behaviour. It provides interventions and alternatives to children and their families dealing with community violence, and anti-social behaviour. The goals of the program are to develop a positive relationship among children, families and the community. Some reasons for referral may be showing defiance at home, school or the community, property destruction, lying, stealing, and bullying. It targets children who are displaying anti-social behaviour, who may have a difficult time communicating with others and expressing their feelings in an appropriate way. Parental consent and involvement is needed, and the emphasis is on early intervention services.
Some interventions that we offer are:
* Parent/Child Educational groups - Skill based group for parents and children. Children learn more effective ways to problem solve and interact with others. Parents learn a variety of parenting "tools" including behaviour management techniques.
* Recreation Program - Highly structured recreation program focusing on teaching social skills, that are incorporated into the activities (i.e.getting along, problem solving and following instructions).
* In-Home Support - Family specialists visit the child's home once a week to help parents implement skills taught in parents group sessions.
* Mentoring Program - As your child transitions out of the New Roads Program, the mentoring program is designed to offer support to the child and family. Your child would be matched up with a positive role model.
Mentoring could be side by side, recreational, or tutorial.
* School Support - Family Specialists work with the child's teachers to provide support or strategies that may benefit that particular child.
|
| Contact Information: |
The referral process is easy, parents can be informed and call us themselves, or you can call with their consent in which we will call to
follow up. Feel free to call to request further information or brochures, please contact the New Roads Program at 274-2297. |
