Turn Off the Violence
To involve children and youth in raising awareness of and promoting alternatives to violence in their families, schools and communities
Peace Heroes
To celebrate and promote the efforts of schools to build peaceful learning communities
Background
Turn Off the Violence was launched in 1991 to raise awareness about violence prevention in our community, and to assist both schools & prevention programs to better co-ordinate their efforts to educate students about violence.
Peace Heroes began in 1995 with the prize money Child Friendly Calgary received in winning the Discovery Toys 'Peace Heroes' award for running a Turn in your violent toy event. The winning prize money was invested in celebrating and promoting the efforts of schools to build peaceful communities.
After consultation between Child Friendly Calgary and the Turn Off the Violence Steering Committee in 2000, it was agreed that the two programs would merge under the direction of the Turn Off the Violence Campaign. In bringing the two programs together each campaign would broaden their sphere of influence, increase awareness, and offer schools a unified approach in turning off the violence by celebrating the peaceful activities that children and youth are already doing in the community.
Goals
- Raise awareness about violence in a learning environment
- Provide alternatives to violence for students and teachers
- Encourage children to provide non-violent solutions to address violence in their own lives, their school, and their communities
- Promote school wide participation in recognising various forms of violence
