We want to give you the tools to make your school a safe, peaceful, and fun place to be!
We know that

Our goal is to celebrate and promote the efforts of schools to build peaceful learning environments. What that means is that we want you to be active peacemakers in your schools. Maybe there is a group or an event at your school that makes your school more peaceful. We want to hear about it! If your school doesn’t have any groups or events that encourage peace, we want you to start one! You can do it and we want to help you!

Why should you tell us about your school and become a Peace Hero? When you become a Peace Heroes school, you join a community called the Peace Heroes Schools Network. This means that you can find out what other schools all over the city are doing to make their schools a great place to be. You can even call those schools to learn more about what they are doing. This is a great way to learn from other students just like you. You might even meet a new friend!

Another cool thing that happens when you become a Peace Hero school is that you can have a Peace Heroes celebration, to celebrate the important things that you are doing to change your school and a local celebrity will come speak to your school! At the celebration, your school will be presented with a medal to celebrate your achievements.

All members of the Peace Heroes Schools Network get our newsletter four times a year. Every newsletter will talk about Peace Heroes celebrations and the different things that Peace Heroes schools are doing to create peace. This is another chance for you to tell everyone in Calgary what a great job you are doing!

When you become a Peace Heroes school, you will be invited to our Peace Heroes Conferences. This is where you will get to spend a day with other like-minded students and learn even more about peace! You can make tons of new friends who are interested in making their school a better place. There will be two Peace Heroes Conferences this year- one in the fall during Turn Off the Violence Week and one in the Spring, next year.

The best thing about being a Peace Heroes school is that your school will become a safer and more peaceful place to be. You can be proud of yourself for making school a better place to be for a whole lot of kids.

Any student can be a Peace Hero. It doesn’t matter if you are in Kindergarten or Grade 12. If you and your school are doing something that makes your school a better, more peaceful place, tell us! To get involved you just need to complete a registration form.

If you want to be a Peace Hero, ask your teachers for a copy of the Peace Heroes Handbook. We made a special Handbook just for youth and sent it to every school in Calgary at the beginning of the year. The Handbook has tons of information about Peace Heroes. You will also find lots of great books, movies, and websites that will help you make your school a better place to be. If you can’t find a copy of the Peace Heroes Handbook at your school, you will find it in our resource section.

While you’re on the website you should tell us what’s on your mind. Who is your personal peace hero? What is your school doing to encourage peace? What issues are important to you? We want to know! Have you written a poem or a song about peace? Share it with us! This website is for YOU so send us any information that you want to see online. You should also check out our Turn Off the Violence page. You have probably seen the Turn Off the Violence posters and bookmarks in your school. You can learn more about Turn Off the Violence and how you can get involved on the website. Keep an eye out for information on the Turn Off the Violence contest for next year! You could win great prizes and even see your own artwork or creative writing on posters and bookmarks next year!
